Blue ribbon fly fishing in Western Montana and Northern Idaho.
River Report : Duncans Guide Blog
April 2.... The "pre runoff" fishing for the last 6 days has been good. Even though we have not yet seen the big push of water during runoff most of the low land snow is gone. The ground is quite saturated so it will not take much rain for the flows to bump up. A far as fishing goes we did well mostly on nymphs. Patterns include the stone fly imitations such as Pats Rubber legs and the twenty incher. Contrary to what you would think in high fast water we fished shallow at 2 to 5 feet down. Focus on the foamy back eddies and do not waste your time on the main river as trout do not hang out there at these flows. Many of the fish caught were smaller than you would expect largely due to the fact that many of the brood fish are busy spawning . Get on the river before the next push of runoff water. These windows do not last long.
